It has been just over four weeks since I stepped away from my full-time corporate writing job and entered the realm of the full-time freelance writer. I can’t believe I made it! For those of you who have no idea who I am or how I got here, here’s the really short version:
My name is Rachel Whitaker, an ambitious 25-year-old from Salt Lake City, Utah. In 2007, I graduated with a degree in English, a minor in editing, and a determination to someday start my own writing business. Through a series of incredible blessings, opportunities, and my wonderful husband, Ryan, I was lucky enough to make it happen after only three years of professional corporate writing/editing experience.
So here I am, and here you are, and here is a fabulous opportunity to get to know one another and share what we know about the world. I want to share my experiences with you, so you can keep track of me, get a good laugh at my expense, and perhaps decide if a writing career (freelance or not) might be right for you. On the flip side, I hope you will come back often, take a look around, and offer up your own insights into life and writing. I know I need tips and encouragement as much as the next writer, so don’t be shy!
Since I’m fairly new to blogging (at least personal blogging; I’ve done it a fair amount for corporations), I see this blog as a kind of writing/design experiment, if you will. In other words, it’s a fun opportunity to figure out what I like and what works and what I am most interested in writing about over the long-term—all while hopefully providing readers with some great information and inspiration for their own writing and interests.
Post topics will vary, depending upon my mood, deadlines, and generally what has happened recently. You can count on:
- stories about my experiences
- musings on what it means to be a writer and how to improve
- tips and ideas on making your writing lifestyle more enjoyable
- a few book reviews every now and again
- and, of course, insightful information on intriguing topics I’m researching/writing about
There’s a teaser for you on what’s to come. Here’s to a brand new adventure and a whole new world of opportunity!
