Traveling Can Be Uncomfortable Sometimes

“Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.”

– Miriam Beard

I’ve traveled a fair amount in my life, but I’ve never done anything like this. Much of this experience has involved and will continue to involve getting used to new situations, new ways of thinking, and the unknown–some things that I am not always entirely comfortable with.

I find that this quote by Miriam Beard (who wrote A History of the Businessman) is fitting to how I’ve already felt at various times on this path. Even though we are staying in a very cushy situation–a very nice house, with a dog that is very easy to care for–there are still elements that are uncomfortable. We don’t have a car, for instance, so if we want to do what we generally came here to do–that is, travel, meet new people, and see new things–we have to walk or bike there. And don’t forget that we are living in someone else’s personal space. There is a certain amount of discomfort and responsibility that comes with that environment–even when the space is organized to be welcoming and comfortable and the people who own it are very warm, kind, and trusting.
